María Cueto
Visual artist
Born in Avilés, she began her training in textile techniques and completed her apprenticeship with courses in tapestry, painting, ceramics, and screen printing in different cities in Spain. She worked alongside leading figures in the textile field such as Mª Asunción Raventós, Grau Garriga, and Vera Szekeley. In 1989, she graduated in Graphic Design from the Oviedo School of Art. Between 1990 and 1994, she received grants from the Ministry of Culture of the Principality of Asturias to research photographic textile weaves. Her research has been applied to projects in opera, set design, screen printing, architecture, and stained glass. Since 1992, she has lived in Berastegi, where she develops her work in close dialogue with nature. She explores new shapes and signs in plant elements, which she captures using various textile techniques, and with them she creates weaves that evolve into aerial and suspended sculptures. The result is a body of work that combines geometry and organicity, volume and lightness, vibration and fragility.
